Join the national multi- faith sponsored prayer movement. My name is Sr. Mary Ellen Lacy, a Daughter of Charity, and I am a new lobbyist with NETWORK, a National Catholic Social Justice Lobby, located in Washington D.C. Presently, I am focusing my efforts on Immigration, Healthcare and Gulf Coast Restoration issues.

Diverse communities of faith around the country will participate in DREAM Sabbath 2011, September 16th to October 9th. During DREAM Sabbath 2011, communities of faith will lift up the lives of DREAM students in prayers, readings, reflection and education during at least one Sabbath service as a way to help educate and spread awareness of DREAM students and their hopes to attain full recognition of their contributions to our communities. Welcome the stranger!!!

Your congregation, house or place of ministry (or anywhere else) can register to hold an event, prayer service or reflection which supports justice for immigrant children. You may sign up directly via website. The website provides an entire tool kit of reflections/prayer services/petitions for participation and it allows for much flexibility.

There is also a possibility for you to arrange for an undocumented young person to come and give her/his story during your service. This is a beautiful opportunity to shake the hand and see the face of Christ in our persecuted brother or sister.

The participation of Religious Congregations, Nursing Homes and Colleges could demonstrate to Congress that a broad spectrum of citizenry support the DREAM Act.

Finally, it is a dynamic way to teach younger school children the need to assist other children who, by no fault of their own, have less bright futures. It costs nothing but compassion!

Some of you might say that President Obama’s recent new administrative policy pertaining to deportation proceedings for those who are presently residing in detention centers make this effort unnecessary. That is inaccurate. The policy, if fully implemented, should eliminate imminent deportations for some of those who would be eligible to obtain other relief under Senator Durbin’s DREAM Act (S. 952).

The new Administrative policy provides for their release from the detention centers and a pathway to valid employment authorizations. However, this administrative policy does not eliminate the need for passage of the DREAM Act because it does not provide a pathway for legal permanent residency or citizenship. Further, since the directive is Administrative in nature, it may be changed or wholly eliminated by the next Administration.
