This is India. Home to 1.2 billion people and to 235 Sisters of Charity of Nazareth who minister to every segment of the society. The first SCNs arrived in India in 1947. Sr.

Ann Roberta recounted for me how she celebrated her 23rd birthday on the trip from Bombay (current day Mumbai) to Calcutta (current day Kolkata). She celebrated her 87th birthday and 62nd year in India while I was visiting. The Sisters began their work in Mokama where they continue to administer a hospital today.

Their initial health care ministry has expanded today to the north, south, east and west of India where the Sisters run state of the art schools, land development projects, hostels for more than 2,000 girls who would otherwise not be able to attend school, centers for the handicapped, alternative education programs for those who never had the opportunity to receive a traditional education, and social service centers offering a variety of services including legal aid. At the United Nations we talk often about the importance of involving those living in poverty themselves in their own development.

In India I saw that reality in action. The Sisters not only minister to, but also with people as they listen to their needs and design, implement and evaluate new programs with the input of all involved.

From the slums of Delhi to the lush green valleys of Kerala; from the impoverished communities in Bihar to the technology rich sectors of Bangalore, the Sisters of Charity are there: teaching, mentoring, inspiring, and challenging young and old alike to take responsibility for their own lives.
